Sudden death — controller failure

The drive disappears mid-use or after a reboot and never returns. The controller chip has failed or locked up; the NAND behind it usually still holds everything. Specialist tooling can often talk past a dead controller.

Firmware bug — 0 GB or wrong model

The drive appears with a strange name, a capacity of 0 GB, or a factory label. Its firmware has crashed into a safe mode. Data is typically intact, and vendor-level access can often restore the translation tables.

Not detected at all

Nothing in BIOS, nothing in Disk Management. On external SSDs the culprit is often the USB bridge or enclosure rather than the drive — genuinely good news, because the SSD inside is frequently healthy and readable.

Accidental deletion — the TRIM reality

Here we owe you honesty: on internal SSDs, the TRIM command erases deleted space within minutes, and such files are usually gone for good. Exceptions exist — TRIM often does not cross USB enclosures, and drives powered off quickly — so evaluation is still worth it.

NAND wear-out

Flash cells have a finite number of writes. A worn drive slows down, throws read errors, then drops to read-only or vanishes. Caught at the read-only stage, most data can still be copied out — do not keep forcing writes to it.

Logical corruption & lost partitions

The drive is healthy but the file system is scrambled — after a power cut, a failed update or a partitioning mistake. These cases behave well: structures can usually be rebuilt from the intact drive with good results.

Do this

  • Don't update or reflash firmware on a failing drive — a botched update can close the last door to your data.

I deleted files from my SSD. Is there any chance at all?
Honest answer: on an internal SSD with TRIM active, deleted files are usually erased within minutes and no lab can bring back what the drive has physically cleared. But do not give up before checking the exceptions: TRIM frequently does not operate across USB enclosures and some external SSDs, the drive may have been powered off before TRIM ran, and copies often survive in cloud sync or backups. My SSD suddenly shows 0 GB or a strange model name. Is the data gone?
Usually not. That behaviour is the signature of a firmware crash — the drive has booted into a factory safe mode and stopped translating flash into files. Do not attempt firmware updates yourself; a wrong image can close the door permanently.
My laptop died and it has an NVMe drive soldered inside. Any options?
Often, yes. If the laptop failed but the storage did not, the drive can be read in the lab — removable NVMe sticks directly, and soldered storage through board-level work on the laptop itself. Success depends on what failed: power circuitry faults around a healthy drive carry good odds; damage to the storage chips themselves is harder. Bring the whole machine, not just the drive bay contents.
The SSD disappeared after a power cut. What likely happened?
A sudden power loss can corrupt the drive translation tables — the internal map between flash cells and your files — or damage the controller supply circuitry. The flash contents usually survive. This is a well-understood failure class: imaging plus map reconstruction recovers many such drives. A UPS and a quality power supply prevent most repeat episodes, which matters in areas with rough mains power.
Does chip-off recovery work on SSDs?
Less often than videos suggest. Modern SSDs encrypt and scramble data across chips, so removing NAND and reading it raw yields ciphertext without the controller context. Real-world flash recovery works through the controller or vendor modes wherever possible. Chip-level work still has its place — mostly on simpler flash devices — but it is a last resort on SSDs, not a first move, and never a home procedure.
Will recovery software from the internet fix my SSD?
Software can help only with logical problems on a healthy drive — lost partitions, corrupted file systems — and even then it must run read-only from another disk. It cannot repair controllers or firmware, and scanning a failing drive for hours can push it over the edge. If the drive is misbehaving physically, or the files were deleted and TRIM applies, software is the wrong tool and the ₹1,000 evaluation is the right one.
